LOCAL INSPIRATION FROM RESTAURANT OWNER, DUOLAN LI

    LOCAL INSPIRATION : DUOLAN LI

Celadon’s Flea & Farmers Market is filled with artisans and makers from all over the Charleston area looking to make a start, or continuing to chase their dreams. We take pride in helping to advocate for our local small businesses, as we too, are a small, local business. This blog series is spotlighting artists and makers who have made a name for themselves among The Holy City and who help to influence and encourage our vendors and customers alike. We are excited to continue with Duolan Li, co-owner of two of Charleston’s favorite restaurants, Xiao Bao Biscuit and Tu!

    BEHIND THE INSPIRATION

    Tell us about yourself.

I’m co-owner of restaurants Xiao Bao Biscuit and Tu with my husband Josh Walker and our partner Joey Ryan. These days being a mom to our one year old daughter is my main focus so catching up on “everything else” is a constant. I also DJ on the side – mainly house and electro music. It keeps me feeling young and there is nothing more brilliant than DJing in our kitchen and dancing with my daughter.

Where do you find your inspiration in Charleston for your work?

I’m inspired by the art and activism of my friends who are challenging what it means to be Southern especially for black and indigenous women of color. Reading books like “Ready From Within” the narrated autobiography of Septima P. Clark and “Denmark Vesey’s Garden” has completely changed how I see Charleston as I walk down its streets.

How would you describe your decorating style?

Much like my fashion sense, it’s all over the place! For our home, I like a tension between modern, gothic, and natural that has an overall calming effect.

What are some of your favorite recent pieces from Celadon?

I’m always drawn to the cozy sectionals and my cat Tu’s favorite arm chair is from Celadon.
