Bamako, Mali has been a bustling hub for handwoven textiles, art, photography and music since the independence from France in the 1960’s…a place full of NGO workers and international tourists headed to Timbuktu and other nearby regions for festivals, artisan workshops, and hiking excursions. Following a complicated military coup in 2012 and attacks since, tourism, the industry that has a so many local makers in the region, has all but ceased. It has also put a halt on product development collaborations with international designers, wholesalers & retailers as the circumstances have sadly made travel prohibitive.
Owner of a gallery and exporting company in this once bustling city, Fatim’s goal is to support Bamako’s local artisans. She travels around the world showing a sampling of their work and giving 100% of the profits directly back to them. We had the honor of hosting Fatim in our store where she showed us a sampling of goods including mud cloths, vintage pieces, leather goods, jewerly, and more. We hope to welcome her back to the store this summer! Stay tuned!
