Our Process

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”

— Martin Buber, Austrian Philosopher

When embarking on an exploration in search of beautiful things Celadon’s buyers never know where the road might lead. A showroom in India can lead to a factory that leads to an artisan that leads to a container full of handmade one-of-a-kinds brought directly to our store. A chance meeting on a roadside in Indonesia can lead to a motorbike ride to a workshop where a decade long relationship is born that brings simplistic, sustainable furniture to our customers at an accessible price point. These are just two of the true tales in our travel journal that tell a story that is still being written.

Accomplished Southern Writer, Carson McCullers, once said, “We are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange.” With multiple trips each year both internationally and domestically, Celadon’s buyers are constantly on the hunt for pieces that embody this push and pull and have searched from Germany to China to Albany, Georgia to find them. From batik style pillows designed and hand-printed in Bali to candles made of repurposed champagne bottles right here in Charleston, to statement dining tables left in their natural, organic tree form and made of wood that was formerly burned as waste, Celadon scours the globe in search of items that will be true conversation pieces, while maintaining a firm commitment to sustainability and fair trade to our global community and local customer base.

Our most recent travels have taken us to Singapore, China, Paris and New York City. Please tune in to our blog to see where we might be next. Feel free to ask questions, make comments and of course share your own travel stories and/or tips about the places you have been. “It’s a world of laughter, a world or tears, it’s a world of hopes, it’s a world of fear, there’s so much that we share, that its time we’re aware, it’s a small world after all.” — The Walt Disney Company
