Here’s to you, Mom
“If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much.” – Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Ouch. The incredibly savvy style icon has spoken, and I don’t think one can be more succinct than that. Being a mom is just about the most incredible job out there – the most difficult, yet the most rewarding… The most challenging, yet the most fulfilling… The most exhausting, yet the most jubilant…
I remember as a little girl, looking up to my mom and thinking about how beautiful she was. I wanted to be just like her, and I recall one morning smiling, teetering around in her high heels, hoping that one day I would be tall and lovely and share that bond with my daughter. What’s amazing to me is how the bond with my mother has simply evolved and strengthened over the years, and still to this day we can walk hand-in-hand on the beach, giggling, just as we did when I was five.
The roles of mothers have changed quite a bit since the days of Jackie O., even… I look at my sister, friends, and co-workers and the balance they must bring to their lives as busy working moms and it’s amazing to me. They juggle daycare, school, doctor’s appointments, play dates; goodness, just packing a bag to leave the house that has all the accoutrements one might need in case there’s a spill or a blowout… It’s exhausting to think about! And that’s not to mention trying to fit in adult time. And then there are all the single moms out there; I am particularly in awe of their ability to get up each day and do what they need to do to raise amazing children. Chances are they’re putting themselves at the bottom of the priority list. However, mothers will always be the ones we turn to for guidance, for support, for help, accolades, nurturing, and most importantly, love.
This Sunday, May 8th, we honor every mom on Mother’s Day. -M
