For the love I cannot believe it is May!!! Elizabeth & I have been gone the entire month of April, and seemed to have returned to lots of warmth, sweet sunshine and a store that is filled with GREAT stuff that has arrived in our absence! The ladies & gents downstairs have been loading lots on our flickr page, but the receiving area and warehouse are busting at the seams (in the best way possible! ), so you must stop in a check out the new goods!

Well, we have been to India and back, and I must say, it was once again a beyond amazing experience in more ways than one.  I think you could go 100 times and leave with a list already begun of what you will do next trip.  It’s an odyssey of a place in countless ways with a spirit like I have rarely experienced….could go on and on and on but that is for another day…

Last February we sort of  “found” these almost nostalgic, children’s skirts while we were not really looking for them (always when you hit the jackpot…happy ((semi-planned)) accident). They are simply perfect for the little girl that loves to twirl. We  grabbed a few as pick-me-ups for the store…well, they were an absolute hit!  People have been asking us when we will have them again, and I became personally invested in finding more of these little skirts that every little bit MUST HAVE!

Well….. we found them on our return, and met some great characters and had some real adventure in our search!!! We even rounded-up some with big sequined embellishments on them for extra fun! They are up in the store as of today!

These are true one-of-a-kind market finds!!! Once they’re gone…they’re gone (until next time- and we never know when that will be).

We have been absolutely crazy (crazy busy) here at Celadon this past month…Where did March even go??

Well, we have some very exciting news to share with all of you in the Celadon Web World…We are making our way in the rug biz!!! This has been in the works for almost a year….We have just gotten in our first sampling of Oushak & Fine Oushak Rugs from India and they are TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY – GORGEOUS!!! Well worth the wait (the best things always are ).

A little bit of info on Oushak Rugs:

Oushak: \ü- shäk\ (ooh-shack)

Oushak rugs originated in the city of Usak, Turkey (a City in the Anatolian Region just South of Istanbul) during the 15th century, and are now made throughout the region from Pakistan to India.

Oushak carpets are distinctive in their designs (typically based on geometric motifs) and color palette, which is created using natural vegetable dyes.

The Oushaks we currently have are from 2 different vendors in India. Each one was hand-knotted on a loom using high quality New Zealand Wool. The larger ones have a beautiful wash giving them the appearance of being old/antique which I love, and you would not believe how soft they feel to walk on…

I was just thumbing through magazines from this past Spring/Summer to shed some sunshine on this rainy (muggy…yuck!) day. Somehow I missed the May Elle Decor in the Spring and what an issue!! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Ellen Pompeo’s home, but this month’s showstopper for me was by far “Modern History” by David Coleman. It featured a barn in upstate New York repurposed as a well-styled, comfortable weekend getaway! ( Umm…You’ve had me since hello!…)

The eclectic mixture of leather and florals, lights and darks, traditional pieces as well as relics from the other side of the globe give the home that push and pull that we LOVE here at Celadon. The way they left the original exposed beams all rugged made the space seem so authentic, all renovations and fancy furniture aside. I was immediately drawn to the large photo of the horses’ heads as we just got in a fantastic (and affordable!!) black & white portrait of a beautiful stallion. I turned the page to see that the couple’s bed is a piece we have carried here at Celadon for years!

Dubbed, “The Congo Bed,” it has been one of the objects of my desire since I started working here (it’s very hard to work in a place filled with beautiful things). It is rich, sturdy, solid wood and has a sort of British Imperial feel to it. All the weight a room needs! I think India Hicks would love it. We recently learned the story behind this anchor of a bed.

The owner of the company that makes it was traveling the world in search of adventure and unique furnishings (sounds good to me!!) when his girlfriend purchased a pair of earrings at an outdoor market in South Africa. The earring’s unusual shape and weighty feel soon became the inspiration for the bed we see today.

We couldn’t love it more, and we are glad to see Elle Decor does too!…..R

“Porch Done 3 Ways” got me longing for dewy summer nights…..I could certainly spend an evening with a glass of wine and some good company and be a happy lady in all 3 spaces, each individually curated by designers, Angie Hranowsky, Biggs Powell, and Julie Rogers, but “Past Forward” was an absolute standout for us here at Celadon!

 It is a profile of the home and studio of Susan and Trenholm Walker.  Aside the fact that she has taken her historic Logan Street home with its traditional piazzas and rod iron accents and transformed it to a well-lived space rich in color, pattern & texture that celebrates artistic traditions both past and present from around the world, each room seems to tell a story…a story of the places Susan has been, and of the people who have made this eclectic collection come to fruition. 

 We here at Celadon have a complete affinity for exotic travel, objects that tell a story and all that is handmade…(not to mention that I am a self-pronounced textile junkie!!!!) so this article hit me at the core as soon as I saw the cover. Elizabeth, our Head Buyer, was so excited to see this article and that it in fact made the cover of the magazine as she recently had the pleasure of meeting Susan Walker this Fall, and could not sing her praises more.

 Aside having an amazing home where local history builds the bones and unique curiousities from inlaid tables to old saris to Morrocan lanterns bring the place to life, she is the owner of illoominata, and you must go to the website and read more about this as it simply cannot be put into words…illoominata celebrates artistic talent, beautiful things, and above all empowering women. 

 Susan is an artist, a humanitarian, and an inspiration. Her words in the article as well as on her website are simply so eloquent and genuine that each sentence seems like it could be on one of those calendars where you rip off a page to start each day on a positive note of appreciating others and their gifts.  Do not read this if you do not like to feel uplifted and inspired because you are sure to do so .  We are so lucky to have people like this in our “mini-city”.

We have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of all of the goods we bought during our February buying trip in India.  The first shipment came this week and OOH-LA-LA….I almost had a cardiac arrest when we opened the boxes!!! 

 From heavy wrapping and bulky boxes the most gorgeous, Kanthas, emerged.  Kanthas are handmade quilts/blankets/throws created using a traditional running decorative embroidery stitch (the word “kantha” actually refers to this stitch), piecing together old saris and other vintage textiles to make a repurposed product from something that is no longer wearable.  You can read more on the history of this tradition  that originated in West Bengal, India. 

 As seems to be the case with “crafts” in general industry-wide right now (scroll down to 5th artcle under “design trends”), kantha embroidery was once a regional, functional, rural “folk” tradition if you will, that has now come full circle to be embraced worldwide as a true art (as it should be!! I cannot even imagine the workmanship that went into each and every one of these!!!).

 We hand-selected each one you will see in the store….they are true one-of-a-kinds, no two will ever be alike, are 100% cotton, and will vary slightly in size.  These are considered “singles,” so they will fit a twin bed nicely as a coverlet, but also look fantastic simply folded at the end of any sized bed for a bohemian ka-bam of color..

The possibilities with these are truly endless given your level of creativity…at $75 each you could have them made into throw pillows or interesting euro shams, or even be used to recover a small chair, stool, bench or ottoman style coffee table. I found this photo via Rickshaw Designs (a blog and company that I was turned on to this summer, and simply LOVE) during my search for more information on the art of the kantha….this photo shows how they were used to re-upholster a headboard…I love this…this idea would be fantastic on a pair of twin beds..it would make for such an interesting space as they would not “match” but instead “complement” one another.  Cutting them and wrapping them on 2 or 3 canvases to create innovative wall décor would be so fun as well…use the left over trimmings to make yourself a wrap or scarf. 

 Between my complete affinity for textiles, handmade things, and the country of India.. I want them all!  2012 sort of snuck-up on us, but it is our resolution to update this blog as often as possible as we have many, many exciting new things in the works here at Celadon for the New Year…..you must stay tuned as mums the word right now….but I will be sure to keep you all in the loop as all the excitement comes to fruition….:)

 January tends to be a roller coaster month around here…A bit of calm after the storm that is the Holiday Season, but it is also Market Season for us so everything that is new begins to roll-out, and we hit the ground running at  domestic shows nationwide to see it all and bring the best back to you!

 All of the above aside….let’s face it…January can feel like the absolute doldrums of winter!!!!…uggghhh…. chilly (windy!!) weather, grey skies, shorter days …sometimes you just want to hide in your closet and re-emerge when it’s time to go to the beach again!!  Well, this burst of unseasonably warm & happy sunshine we have been experiencing has inspired us to beat the wintertime blues!  And with what better shade (of BLUE might I add….) Turquoise!

 There is something about a blue/green palette that can feel both clean & soothing as well as bright & uplifting at the same time.  If you know us, you are most likely aware of our marriage to white and light neutrals, but we have an absolute love of all that is aqua/blue-green/turquoise that simply cannot be denied!

 Have a look at one of my favorite vignettes that is currently staged at the front of the store.  A crisp white Cindy Sofa is the canvas, as an electric pair of Ikat Blue/Green throw pillows (made in the USA!!!) sets off a pair of “Finger Paint Pillows” in the intense color.  These pillows were the design of the artist’s little boy that he then screen-printed and made into an amazing (and affordable) line of unique pillows.  Another showstopper in this setting is the Round Lucite Coffee Table…this nod to the modern life was handmade in Los Angeles, CA and could look just as hot on a rugged white-washed floor as on a Vintage Oushak Rug.  Add the fun coffee table books (I could live in a Slim Aarons book and be one happy woman) and these uber cozy,  patterned, slipcovered chairs and you have a masterpiece in blue, white & green I tell you!

 We are headed to Atlanta this weekend for a show and adding some spice to this trip…we will be checking out some very funky European antiques-will report back (!!!!!)…..Cheers!- R

We have gotten in an absolute plethora of insanely unique, beautiful mirrors, and I just thought I would share some of them with you on this wintery afternoon.

French King, Louis XIV has been credited with seeing the potential of the mirror in the design of a room, and I must say he was on to something…but enough stuffy stuff…it’s Friday!  Mirrors can be both fun and functional.. and can certainly be works of art all on their own.  They easily give life to a room as well as give a brighter, larger appearance to a space when placed properly (both good things in my book!).

It’s Celadon’s delinquent blogger here….New shipments from all of the summer shows have just been pouring in since our return from Mexico, and I must say the store is looking pretty fantastic filled with all of this great new stuff!  Working here will give you the “I wants” something terrible…

Since we try to keep things nice and natural with our casegoods, sofas, and sectionals (the big stuff), the accessories are where you can really have some fun and keep things fresh.  It’s amazing how changing throw pillows can sometimes flip the entire feel of a  room.

Elizabeth and I are back from Mexico (we went on somewhat of an impromtu buying adventure for Celadon last week).  We have  been busy unwrapping all of the one-of-a-kind treasures we found in market mazes and little outdoor stands manned by working artisans while on the trip…….

We still have more to open, and I intend to write a proper travel journal entry that does the people and places we visited full justice next week.  It was truly an amazing trip, and I simply cannot say enough great things about how friendly, helpful, accommodating, endearing, smiley, etc…etc..etc…the people of Guadalajara, Mexico are!  Stay tuned for that…

In the meantime….I thought I would give you a sneak peek of some gorgeous handmade clay crosses, the sweetest crocheted gauze dresses for the little ones, and hand-beaded bracelets that are each so intricately detailed and down right fancy, it’s impossible to decide on just one!!

The bed can say so much about your personal style as well; you may have a one-of-a-kind, hand-carved bed from India or a soft, tufted linen bed with curvy lines.  Maybe it’s a distinctive four poster bed with a dark finish, or a classic three-panel bed to complement any décor.  Don’t have any of those?  Well, we sure do!  And they’re gorgeous.  On display now on the showroom floor.  Come get inspired!  Isn’t it past your bedtime?  -M

 I wanted to share just a few snaps of some fun cards, jewels and other accessories that just arrived.  We got in some great looking bracelets, baubles and necklaces that are super inexpensive from the Atlanta Show, as well as some new “noodle bracelets” that you must see on!!! These are designed and handmade by a local woman (who is a mother of 5!!!!) and are super sophisticated wax cord and metal creations.  She has also stocked us with her handmade wrap bracelets (which I think every person on staff has purchased one) that come in an array of cord and bead colors and could be worn anywhere from work to a fancy night out on the town. 

 Another talented jewelry designer out of Richmond that has been a Celadon staple for years, just brought us in a fresh sampling of her newest vintage re-designs on Friday and those will hit the floor today!!

 Keeping with the local theme….our friend Adam of Rewined Candles, who’s business is simply soaring after his praises were recently sung in both Charleston Home Magazine and Garden & Gun, just dropped a fresh shipment of his green, environmentally friendly, soy candles made of re-purposed champagne bottles.  They have a fun look, long burn, and fresh scent.  We couldn’t be happier for him and all of his recent success.  Pop in and get them while they’re hot!!!

 I personally still love the art of writing a letter, so I am a complete sucker for unique cards/stationary/etc.  We just picked-up a new line out of Wilmington, NC that boasts both beautiful, letterpress quality, and laugh-out-loud designs. I can’t tell you how much I love this pink elephant…its so sweet it makes my heart melt!

 A new shipment of cards by Breathless Paper just arrived as well.  Breathless churns out an array designs straight from their Atlanta workshop, and the Owner/Designer, Jessica, also owns a fantastic store in the Virginia Highlands called Urban Cottage.  I try to make it by whenever I am in the Atlanta area.  The Highlands in general is one of the city’s greatest jewels, and Urban Cottage stages an eclectic mix of home things, clothing, gifty items…really just cool stuff all the way around…and is so inspirational in the way it is so well-merchandised.  The website cannot even begin to do it justice!!! You must stop in for a peak if you are in the area.

 Anyhow…Some unique small treasures and tiny wonders have arrived that we just can’t get enough of and thought we would share with you…..Rebecca

 PS. Just got in a shipment of this airy, bohemian Savannah Gauze Linen Bedding….It makes a bed look like heaven…just had to share…

A couple of our favorites that just made their way into the store are a set of glass-topped, round  coffee tables with bases made of repurposed, wooden architectural pieces that have been left unfinished.  The juxtaposition of the old wood with all its elegant imperfections and the sleek glass is simply spot on!! Pair one of these with a clean, crisp, white/natural sectional and bold, geometric throw pillows and you have an eclectic space that tells a story, feels uncontrived and is anything but “themey”. 

We are also all loving this lattice backed shelf….The way the light pours through the back gives the piece such individuality… and the vibrant color would make storing white dishes, glass or even gold items so visually appealing.

 There is much more to see…a demi-lune that I am sure will not make it through the weekend without being sold, and some shelves that I am personally partial to.  They are made of old pieces of wood that still have their original metal shipping tags attached.  In all fairness, I have NO IDEA what these tags say, but they tell a tale of this object’s former life many years ago on the other side of the world.  I had my eye on a similar one when this sort of container arrived last summer…well as the old saying goes…you snooze, you lose!…hopefully whoever has it now loves it lots.  No two pieces from this vendor are ever alike, so should you see something that fits your fancy..make your purchase!!

 Well…we have recently gotten in quite a few stunners here at Celadon, and they are ALL 15%- 40% OFF through Wednesday, July 20^th.  From beautiful white-washed, distressed, farmhouse tables to solid dark wood and round, the selection of styles, sizes and finishes in the store right now is really phenomenal.

 The guys just brought in a one-of-a-kind, 10 foot, solid wood table that has been left in its original “treeform”.   We found these in Indonesia, and they boast impeccable craftsmanhip, artistic vision, and some serious weight! Moving this puppy was no small feat, but it would be the absolute shining star in any home!!  We have them in several lengths, and each one is completely unique in its table-top shape.  We only get containers of these in twice a year and these tables fly right out of the door every time…so come have a look!  (BTW…I think this would make an insane conference table!!!).

Like most good things in life, great style seems to be achieved when it comes organically and does not feel forced. We like to think that the feel of our store is no different.

Celadon’s look is nestled in a unique ambiguity of casual but dressed-up, masculine but feminine, current but timeless, chic but comfortable, clean but inviting. Riding this fine line is almost our signature. We often find that using natural fibers, textures, and color palettes for the large pieces in a space, and letting the accessories tell the rest of the story creates just this feel. That’s why one of our favorite colors for upholstered furniture here at Celadon is….drum roll……WHITE.

I know, I know, I know……you are rolling your eyes and fully armed with at least 25 snarky remarks on the practicality (or lack there of) of life with a white sofa. Images of muddy paw prints after the dog takes a seat, junior having a hey day with crayola, or a clumsy moment with a glass of red wine are probably just a few of the mental pictures that have sent you running toward the dark brown sofa that you might currently be sitting on. But life in white is actually easier than you think!!!! Slipcover styles are more popular than ever, and have also stood the test of time. A slipcover style can fit the bill anywhere from the beach to a downtown loft. Choose a quality, durable fabric that can go straight to the washing machine, and there is almost nothing that bleach can’t get out!

1. This photo was taken here at Celadon this past Fall. We love how the plushy all white bed could not be more inviting, but also lets the natural, rustic bed shine. Throw pillows could take this look in one million different directions depending on your choices.
